In 1984, a group of engineers under the direction of Liu Chuanzhi and Danny Lui founded Lenovo as Legend. By unit sales, Lenovo is the most significant personal computer vendor in the world as of 2021. It operates in over 60 nations and sells its goods in 180 countries. Its most well-known brands are the IdeaPad, Yoga, and Legion lines of desktop computers and the ThinkPad business line of laptops (which it acquired from IBM). A group of eleven engineers from the Institute of Computing Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences founded Lenovo in Beijing in 1984. The group's initial attempt to import televisions was unsuccessful. It reorganized as a business that tested computers for quality. Lenovo published its first job posting on the front page of the China Youth News in May 1988. In 1994, it went public through a Hong Kong IPO that brought in nearly USD 30 million. It sold about a million computers in 1998 and controlled 43% of China's domestic computer market. In 2005, IBM sold its ThinkPad line to Lenovo.
